FROM SOURCE TO SHAPE

Run it in three steps.

  1. Save the source.

    Download geo-modularStars.c into a folder on your computer.

  2. Compile it.

    In that folder, run this with GCC or Clang:

    cc -std=c11 -O2 geo-modularStars.c -lm -o geo-modularStars
  3. Make the image.
    ./geo-modularStars

    Open geo-modularStars.svg in a browser to see the result.

On Windows with GCC, name the executable geo-modularStars.exe and run it from the same folder.

THE RULE IN THE PROGRAM

How the picture is built

Place residues 0 through N-1 on a circle and join j to j+skip modulo N. The gcd gives the number of disjoint cycles.

Make it your own

VERTICES = 97 (5..240); SKIP = 37 (1..119).

The circular layout is chosen for clarity. A skip divisible by the vertex count makes zero-length edges. Each run produces one image; use Graphic mode for the interactive animation.
