FROM SOURCE TO SHAPE

Run it in three steps.

  1. Save the source.

    Download gaussian-prime-field.c into a folder on your computer.

  2. Compile it.

    In that folder, run this with GCC or Clang:

    cc -std=c11 -O2 gaussian-prime-field.c -lm -o gaussian-prime-field
  3. Make the image.
    ./gaussian-prime-field

    Open gaussian-prime-field.svg in a browser to see the result.

On Windows with GCC, name the executable gaussian-prime-field.exe and run it from the same folder.

THE RULE IN THE PROGRAM

How the picture is built

Plot primes of Z[i]. Off-axis points require prime norm; axis points require a rational prime congruent to 3 modulo 4.

Make it your own

extent=50

The square display window is finite. Rational primes congruent to 1 modulo 4 factor in Z[i] and are excluded from the coordinate axes. Each run produces one image; use Graphic mode for the interactive animation.
